Bucks County emergency services — hospitals, police, fire & 911

Six hospitals, two trauma centers, 54 municipal police arrangements, a volunteer fire tradition, and one county 911 system — mapped for home shoppers, not headlines.

Nobody tours a house thinking about the ambulance ride they hope never happens — but where you buy quietly decides which police department answers your calls, which fire company rolls to your address, and how far the nearest emergency room is. In Bucks County those answers change from one municipality to the next, and sometimes from one side of a road to the other.

This guide maps the county’s emergency infrastructure the way a local would explain it: the hospitals and trauma centers, how police coverage actually works across 54 municipalities, why the fire service runs on volunteers, and the county 911 system that ties it all together. Written by a local Realtor — facts you can verify, no fear-selling.

Why It Matters

Why emergency services belong on every home shopper’s checklist

Police coverage is set by municipality

Every Bucks County address is policed by its municipality’s arrangement: a department of its own, a regional force shared with neighbors, a contract with a nearby borough or township, or the Pennsylvania State Police. The arrangement is part of what your municipal taxes fund — so two similar houses in different municipalities can come with different coverage and different tax bills.

The fire service runs on volunteers

Bucks County fire protection is overwhelmingly delivered by volunteer fire companies, with career or combination staffing in some of the larger townships. For homeowners the practical angle is insurance: carriers price policies partly on the ISO fire-protection class for the address — distance to the responding station and to a hydrant — which matters most for rural homes on wells with no hydrant grid.

ER distance is a real number, not a feeling

Bucks County has six acute-care hospitals with emergency departments, including two accredited Level II adult trauma centers, and the region’s Level I centers and children’s hospitals sit just beyond the county line in Philadelphia and the Lehigh Valley. Which one is “yours” depends on the address — worth knowing before you buy, not after.

One 911 system covers the whole county

Wherever you buy in Bucks County, 911 is answered by the county’s Emergency Communications center in Ivyland, which dispatches police, fire, and EMS for all 54 municipalities and supports text-to-911. You never need to know which department covers you to get help — but as a homeowner it is worth knowing anyway.

The Hospitals

Every hospital in Bucks County

Six acute-care hospitals operate emergency departments inside the county — each has a full guide covering what it is, who it serves, and what home shoppers nearby should know.

Just beyond the county line

Northeast Philadelphia

Jefferson Torresdale Hospital

Level II adult trauma center just over the county line — the traditional trauma destination for Bensalem and the riverfront corridor.

Abington, Montgomery County

Jefferson Abington Hospital

Major regional hospital just over the Montgomery County line — the close option for Warminster, Southampton, and Feasterville-Trevose.

Trenton, NJ

Capital Health Regional Medical Center

Across the river from Morrisville and Yardley — a regional trauma and neuroscience center reachable over the free bridges.

Bethlehem, Lehigh Valley

St. Luke’s University Hospital — Bethlehem

The St. Luke’s network’s Level I trauma center, backing up the Upper Bucks Campus for the county’s northern tier.

Philadelphia

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP)

The region’s pediatric referral center, with a Level I pediatric trauma center; CHOP also operates specialty-care and urgent-care locations in and around Bucks County.

Philadelphia

Philadelphia’s academic Level I centers

Penn, Jefferson, and Temple operate the region’s Level I adult trauma centers — roughly 45–60 minutes from most of the county, closer from lower Bucks.

The County Backbone

The systems behind every local department

Bucks County 911 — Emergency Communications

The county’s consolidated 911 center at the Emergency Services Complex on Freedom Way in Ivyland answers every emergency call in the county and dispatches police, fire, and EMS for all 54 municipalities. The center supports text-to-911 and has been recognized as Pennsylvania’s emergency communications center of the year.

Bucks County Emergency Management Agency

Operating from the same Ivyland complex, the county EMA coordinates disaster planning and response and runs the county’s special operations assets — the hazmat team, the technical rescue task force, and the fire marshal’s office — that back up local departments on major incidents.

Pennsylvania State Police — Troop M, Dublin barracks

Municipalities without a local or contracted police department are covered by the Pennsylvania State Police, primarily from the Dublin barracks on Rickert Road near Perkasie. In Bucks County that is mostly the rural upper county — part of why municipal taxes there run lighter.

Regional police departments

Two regional forces serve clusters of municipalities: the Central Bucks Regional Police Department (Doylestown Borough, Chalfont, and New Britain Borough) and the Pennridge Regional Police Department (East Rockhill and West Rockhill townships). Several other boroughs buy coverage by contract from a neighbor instead.

Questions People Ask

Bucks County emergency services — frequently asked questions

What hospitals are in Bucks County, PA?

Bucks County has six acute-care hospitals with emergency departments: St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne, Penn Medicine Doylestown Health (Doylestown Hospital), Grand View Hospital in Sellersville, St. Luke’s Upper Bucks Campus outside Quakertown, Jefferson Bucks Hospital in the Oxford Valley area, and Lower Bucks Hospital in Bristol Township. Philadelphia’s academic medical centers and children’s hospitals are within reach of the lower county, and the St. Luke’s and Lehigh Valley networks serve the upper county.

Does Bucks County have a trauma center?

Yes — two accredited Level II adult trauma centers: St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne and Grand View Hospital in Sellersville. St. Luke’s Upper Bucks Campus near Quakertown is an accredited Level IV trauma center. The nearest Level I adult trauma centers and pediatric trauma centers are in Philadelphia and the Lehigh Valley.

Who answers 911 in Bucks County?

All 911 calls in Bucks County are answered by the county’s Emergency Communications center in Ivyland, which dispatches police, fire, and EMS for every municipality in the county and supports text-to-911. There is no town-by-town patchwork of dispatch centers — one county system covers every address.

Do all Bucks County towns have their own police department?

No. Each of the county’s 54 municipalities chooses its arrangement: many run their own department, some share a regional force (Central Bucks Regional and Pennridge Regional), some contract coverage from a neighboring municipality, and the most rural townships rely on the Pennsylvania State Police from the Dublin barracks. The arrangement can change, so verify it with the municipality for any address you are considering.

Are Bucks County fire departments volunteer?

Overwhelmingly, yes. Fire protection across Bucks County is delivered by dozens of volunteer fire companies, with some career or combination staffing in larger townships. Companies are funded through a mix of municipal fire taxes, fund drives, and grants, and all are dispatched through the county 911 center in Ivyland.

How do emergency services affect homeowners insurance?

Insurers price homeowners policies partly on the ISO fire-protection classification for the address, which reflects the responding fire company’s resources and the distance to the station and to a working hydrant. Homes in hydrant-served neighborhoods generally rate better than rural homes served by tanker; if you are shopping in the upper county, ask your insurance agent to quote the actual address before you commit.

Should I look at crime statistics before buying a home?

Under the Fair Housing Act, real-estate professionals do not steer buyers with safety characterizations, and this guide deliberately carries no crime data or neighborhood safety ratings. If that research matters to you, go to the primary sources yourself: the municipality’s police department, the Pennsylvania Uniform Crime Reporting System, and your own visits to the area at different times of day.

Weighing homes across municipal lines?

Police arrangements, fire coverage, ER distance, and the taxes that fund them all — that is address-level diligence, and it is exactly what I run for buyers. Tell me where you are looking.
